Careers: Tamale Life
BILL, Systems Engineer
BA in Computer Science & in Economics
Columbia University

"People are using code that I wrote — it is very rewarding to see my efforts turn into something that people use and like."
Though Bill works in the Boston office, he visits New York City often, which is easily possible due to our multi-city office structure. The duality of his personal geography is reflected in what he does for work: Bill enjoys focusing on internals, including BEFE: Back End of the Front End.
Getting to know Bill:
Q: What is your role at Tamale?
A: I am a systems engineer focusing on what we call internals (BEFE, server, and BEFE-server interaction). I touch all parts of the code base, but devote the majority of my time to the platform, the BEFE, the server, and the interaction between the client and server.
Q: What’s the coolest thing you’ve done at Tamale?
A: Designing a persistent cache that allows users to initiate a download, interrupt it, and continue later via byte range requests. It also allows for disconnected operation and is fully client side compatible. But work, in general, is cool. I enjoy everything about it, from the people I work with, the variety of projects, the challenge of the problems presented.
Q: What do you tell friends and family who ask what you do?
A: I’m a developer at a software company that makes an RMS (research management solution). They don't tend to ask too much more.
Q: What do you love to do outside of work?
A: I read anything and everything, and my favorite book is The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. I play ultimate frisbee and video games (not usually at the same time). I love rollerblading and running along the Charles River in Boston. I also enjoy visiting New York City, where Daniel is my favorite restaurant. In Boston, my current eatery pick is Peach Farm in Chinatown.
