Careers: Tamale Life
JEAN, Software Engineer & Designer
AB Computer Science
Dartmouth College

“My work is extremely visible, which makes me really think through the decisions I make when designing the UI.”
Jean focuses on what the customer sees: front-end UI and all aspects of usability. This requires a rare individual who can switch hats between engineer and user working simultaneously on the back-end guts that make RMS work, and the front-end components that create the user experience.
Getting to know Jean:
Q: What is your role at Tamale?
A: I’m a software engineer / designer, and I concentrate on front-end and user interface development and usability issues.
Q: What is your favorite thing about working at Tamale?
A: My favorite thing is crafting the user experience, and working with super-intelligent, motivated, interesting people in a no-bureaucracy, dress-code-free environment. I know I play an important role in the company’s growth since I joined on as Tamale’s fourth employee!
Q: What’s the coolest thing you’ve done at Tamale?
A: I’ve designed and developed the central on-screen component of the Tamale RMS solution, the Research Board.
Q: What do you love to do when you’re not working?
A: My housemates and I have frequent dinner parties, and I help with most of the cooking. I love trying new restaurants and pubs in Boston and elsewhere. I’m a big baseball fan (watching at Fenway, playing, fantasy). I try to put my clarinets to good use, and I enjoy visiting family and friends many time zones away.
Q: What do you tell friends and family who ask what you do?
A: I am responsible for what the user sees and does with our software, and that our users are smart, busy investment professionals who need to collaborate, organize and manage their research. I also tell them our customers have offices with spectacular views.
