Careers: Tamale Life
STEVE, Software Engineer
BA in Computer Science, New York University
MS in Electronic Commerce, Carnegie Mellon University

“I'm proud of Tamale's dedication to building great software. We are making lots of big changes: upgrading to Java 5, 64-bit OS, etc. A lot of companies would be hesitant to make such changes, but not us.”
Though Steve has impressive credentials, he's an autodidact at heart, learning by doing across a whole range of skills. He points out that a desire for efficiency is a means toward developing great software and procedures — so that you don't have to do more work to get a better result.
Getting to know Steve:
Q: What is your favorite part of your job?
A: We get to work with a lot of leading edge technologies. We need to keep up-to-date with what's available to provide the best value for our customers. I also enjoy that our customers believe in our product. Their usage reinforces that our product is a great solution, and that it truly helps them every day.
Q: When friends and family ask what you do, or what Tamale is, what do you tell them?
A: I start by telling them that I work with computers and write software ... and if they are still with me in the conversation, I explain that Tamale RMS is a research management system that helps funds leverage their research. For example, often, an office will dump all their information on a shared drive, but there is no simple way to locate or use the data. Consequently, valuable information ends up in a black hole. Tamale RMS helps them organize the data and cross-reference everything to make use of what is usually a daunting amount of information.
Q: What's the coolest thing you've done at Tamale?
A: I'm currently building a template system that allows us to provide customized rich-user interface to our system very quickly. It will better integrate Tamale in our clients' workflow.
Q: What are your favorite things to do outside of work?
A: I love to travel the world with my camera. When I am not away, I enjoy swimming, golfing, or snowboarding, really depends on the season. I enjoy reading; my current favorite is Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series, and I also love Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. I live in New York City, and there are so many good places to eat here. A place I keep returning to is Habana on Prince and Elizabeth Streets — they have the best corn-on-the-cob. As for local outings, at the top of the list is definitely Central Park. I also like to study languages; I speak Chinese, am studying Korean, and hope to be fluent in Japanese soon, too.
